Wooden Clearer Board with Rhombus Bee Escape

A simple clearer board with flat edges and a rhombus bee escape fitted using stainless steel screws.  This board is very robustly designed with an overall thickness of 32mm including a 10mm thick exterior grade (WBP) ply board.  The exterior rim is 40mm wide and fits onto the hive body.  It does not interlock but provides plenty of clearance both above and below the board for rapid clearing of supers.

This type of clearer board should only be used for short periods - 4 to 12 hours is typical and they have been known to completely clear a set of supers in just two hours.  If left on too long the bees will find their way back into the supers but the rapid clearing if used correctly allows the honey to be gathered while still as warm as possible, for fast extracting.  The rhombus escape we have chosen is regarded as one of the most efficient of its type and with no moving parts to clog and able to work for both workers and drones it will give years of  service if well looked after.  Unlike Porter escape there are no metal parts to rust. 

This clearer board is not treated as it is only meant to be used for short periods.   If the escape is removed and the board inverted it can be used like a crown board for winter feeding of fondant.  However, if used in this fashion it must be properly protected with for example, several coats of a suitable wood preservative such as Cuprinol Clear.  If being used inverted we recommend a sheet of polythene is placed under the board with a hole cut in it to aligning with the hole in the board. This will make the board easier to remove.
