Hive Bodies etc

Hive Paint

This acrylic hive paint is easy to use, drying in about two hours and brushes and roller can be cleaned in water afterwards.  Paint the roof and floors on all surfaces but hive bodies need painting on the outside only.  Two coats are ideal.  If you choose to paint the inside of the hive bodies put petroleum jelly on the upper and lower edges to prevent the hive bodies sticking to each other - even after the paint is dry.

This paint is a matt green which we have found suits the hives well.  You can paint the hives after they have been fully assembled but a useful tip is to assemble only 3 sides of each hive body first, leaving off the plastic edges.  With the fourth long side resting on blocks of wood you can now paint all the outside of the hive body and after the last coat has dried slide on the plastic edges and glue the last side in place.  This method, courtesy of Fleet Beekeepers' , saves time and gives a very nice finish.

Apply the first coat thinly - do not try to get complete coverage on the first coat, the second coat will provide all the coverage required.

This 500ml bottle will be enough for about two hives each with a couple of supers but this will depend to some extent on how thickly you apply the paint.
